Did you know that there is more than one kind of dental cleaning visit? The type of teeth cleaning our dentist recommends for you depends upon the health of your smile. While it may not seem important to know the difference, it will go a long way to help you save your smile and preserve your budget. Some cleanings are recommended only when your gums are threatened by infection and not every type will be covered by your insurance.
What Type of Dental Cleaning Do You Need?
Preventive: ProphylaxisRoutine cleanings are performed by a dental hygienist, every six months, to prevent decay and gum disease. They are recommended by our dentist to preserve your dental health. Benefits of preventive cleanings include:
• Removes stains from teeth
• Removes plaque and calculus
• Clears away bacteria
• Cleans hard to reach places
A dental debridement is performed when a patient has not visited the dentist for regular cleanings in a year or more. The large scale build up of plaque must be removed from the teeth, above and below the gum line, before our dentist can adequately assess the state of your dental health.
Treatment: Scaling and Root Planing
Also known as deep cleanings, scaling and root planing are necessary when our dentist identifies symptoms of gum disease. The visit is similar to a routine cleaning, yet the process is more in-depth. The hygienist will clean the roots of your teeth, beneath the gum line. Some doctors, like our Kennewick, WA, dentist Dr. Andrew T. Mohlman, offer sedation dentistry options to prevent discomfort. However, most patients do fine without it. Symptoms of periodontal infection may include:
• Red, swollen gums
• Bleeding gums
• Bad breath
• Wide periodontal pockets
• Receding gums
• Loose teeth
Therapy: Periodontal Maintenance
The bacteria that cause gum disease are always present in your mouth and once you have had an infection, you are susceptible to a reoccurrence. If you have had gum disease treatment, our dentist will recommend periodontal maintenance. These cleanings are performed every three to four months.
