Bonding/White Fillings
Bonding is a composite resin that is used as an alternative to amalgams (silver fillings) and veneers. This is an excellent cosmetic option for those patients who do not want the look of silver in their mouths and do not want the expense of veneers. Bonding can be used on teeth that are decayed, cracked, or stained.
Procedure The bonding procedure is completed in one visit. After the tooth is anesthetized, the first step is to remove the decayed or unsightly portion of the tooth. The tooth is then etched with a gel and a bonding agent is applied, allowing the composite resin to adhere strongly to the prepared tooth. The putty-like resin is then placed, shaped, and cured with a special light. The restoration is then trimmed and polished leaving you with a beautiful, natural-looking restoration.
Bonding Durability Although composite resins are cosmetically pleasing and can last several years, they need to be evaluated periodically and maintained over time, like any other dental restoration. Proper hygiene and diet will extend the life of the bonded filling. If the filling chips or develops recurrent decay the restoration will need to be replaced.
