If making just one lifestyle change could improve your oral health, would you resolve to make that change? As 2016 comes into sight, many people are thinking about making New Year’s resolutions. Dr. Andrew T. Mohlman and the rest of the team at A Family Dental Center would like to encourage the members of our community to make resolutions that can benefit their oral health. If you do, the next time you see your dentist in Kennewick, WA, you could see some very positive changes.

Daily Choices Add Up

Soda is something that just about everyone loves but this sweet drink can have some very negative consequences on your teeth and gums. Soda is generally full of sugar, which can stimulate the growth of bacteria responsive for cavities and gum disease. Some sodas also have a relatively high acidic character, which can damage tooth enamel over time. Weak enamel is less able to resist cavities, too.

Brushing and flossing can help manage the amount of harmful bacteria and plaque buildup on your teeth, but unfortunately many people do not perform adequate at-home dental hygiene. There are three important aspects to maintaining good dental hygiene. These are:

• Brushing twice a day for two minutes at a time
• Flossing once a day
• Seeing your family dentist for dental cleanings and checkups on a regular basis

Not everyone brushes for a full two minutes twice a day. Moreover, using a toothbrush with worn or frayed bristles robs you of the full benefit of brushing. Flossing has to be done correctly in order to be fully effective. And finally, some people do not prioritize regular dental checkups. Add a soda habit to these lifestyle choices and you might face a growing problem. Simply cutting down the amount of soda you drink, or eliminating it altogether, will have significant positive effects on your dental health.
